The Beauty of Hand Block Printing

There is something unmistakably special about a hand block print. Look closely and you’ll see the subtle variations left by the maker’s hand — tiny shifts in colour and placement that give the cloth its character and remind us that it has been created slowly, not simply produced.

Elodie, one of the hand block prints from our Celestine collection, is a beautiful example of this centuries-old craft.

Printed onto crisp cotton poplin, Elodie brings together soft blue, fresh turquoise, touches of pink and deeper indigo in an intricate floral design. It feels fresh and summery, yet has the timeless quality we love in traditional Indian textiles.

From Sanganer, by Hand

Elodie is hand block printed in Sanganer, Rajasthan, an area near Jaipur renowned for its long tradition of textile printing.

The process begins with the design being carved by hand into wooden blocks, with separate blocks created for the different elements and colours within the pattern. The cotton is prepared and laid out across long printing tables before the artisan begins working methodically across the cloth.

Each block is dipped into colour, carefully positioned and pressed firmly onto the fabric by hand. The process is repeated again and again, with the printer aligning each impression by eye to gradually build the pattern across metres of cotton.

For a design as detailed as Elodie, this requires remarkable skill and rhythm. Each additional colour and layer needs to meet the one before it, slowly transforming the plain cloth into the finished print.

It is this human element that makes block printing so beautiful. Slight variations are not imperfections, but part of the story of the fabric — evidence of the hands and traditional skills behind every metre.

Meet the Luca Shirt

We chose our Luca Shirt to showcase Elodie because its simple silhouette allows the intricacy of the print to shine.

Made in cotton poplin, Luca is a classic short-sleeved shirt with a neat collar and button-through front. Gentle gathering through the sleeve gives it a feminine touch without taking away from its relaxed, everyday feel.

Wear it tucked into a skirt or pant for a more polished look, or leave it untucked for something relaxed and effortless. We especially love Elodie paired with that beautiful cobalt blue — it picks up the deeper blues within the print perfectly.

Meet the Saffron Skirt

In our Saffron Skirt, Elodie takes on a completely different personality.

The generous tiered silhouette gives the print room to move, creating a lovely sense of colour and pattern with every step. An elasticated waist keeps it relaxed and comfortable, while pockets make it an easy piece for everyday wear.

Pair it simply with a white top and sandals and let Elodie do all the talking, or play with the colours within the print to create a brighter summer look.
