From Brushstroke to Cloth

Some prints begin with an idea. Others begin with a feeling.

The Heritage Check began as a simple watercolour — painted lines on a page, each one slightly imperfect, each one carrying the quiet character of the hand that made it.

Our collaboration with Julie Harrison of Pattern Play Studio has evolved over time, working together across multiple collections to develop prints that feel both considered and wearable. There’s an ease to the process now — a shared understanding of colour, balance and how a print will live within a garment.

When Julie first shared a series of prints using her painterly lines, there was something in them that immediately stood out. At the time, I was looking to introduce a check into the collection — something with a sense of heritage, but still soft and expressive.

I asked Julie if it might be possible to rework those lines into a check.

A Collaboration in Colour

What began as soft, painterly lines evolved through a careful, collaborative process.

Julie’s original artwork was scanned and reworked — colours shifted, tones deepened, layers refined. Together, we shaped the palette to reflect the mood of Wildwood — something richer, more grounded, yet still vibrant.

Julie describes it beautifully:

“It was important to give the print a seasonal Autumn/Winter feel whilst referencing future fashion colours… I absolutely love the dynamic, bold colour palette and how it fits seamlessly within Wildwood.”

It’s this balance of intuition and refinement — built over time — that allows each print to feel both expressive and considered.

Designed to Be Worn

The Heritage Check was designed not just to be seen, but to be lived in.

Across the collection, the print is brought to life on three different organic cotton base cloths — stretch drill, poplin and French Terry — each one chosen to suit the silhouette and how it’s worn.

Structured pieces feel polished and tailored. Softer styles move with ease. Layering pieces add warmth and versatility.

From dresses to shirts, jackets to trousers, each garment offers a different expression of the same print — designed to mix effortlessly with corduroy, denim and the wider Wildwood collection.

A Shared Approach

At its heart, this print is about collaboration — one that has grown over time.

Working with independent designers like Julie is an important part of what we do. There’s something special about developing a shared rhythm — where ideas flow easily and each collection builds on the last.

As Julie so generously shared:

“It’s a real thrill seeing my print come to life on these beautifully made pieces.”

And for us, it’s just as meaningful to continue that journey together.
