Inspired by a Tropical Escape

Some of the best design inspiration comes when you least expect it. A change of scenery, a little sunshine and the freedom to slow down and take in the world around you.

For textile artist Fizah Malik, a tropical holiday sparked the inspiration for something a little different. Moving away from the intricate florals and paisleys we've come to know and love in her work, Fizah embraced a more playful approach, capturing the colours, patterns and carefree spirit of a tropical escape.

The result is Tropical Patchwork, an exclusive print created for ella & sunday. A joyful mix of swaying palms, sunshine, citrus fruits, tropical flowers and colourful toucans, brought together in a vibrant patchwork of hand-painted illustrations.

A little nostalgic, wonderfully playful and full of summer spirit.

From Inspiration to Illustration

One of the things we love most about collaborating with artists is seeing how an idea evolves into something completely unique.

Fizah's creative journey began with a mood board of tropical landscapes, bold botanical shapes, playful patterns and a warm, earthy colour palette.

From there, she developed a collection of hand-painted illustrations, experimenting with colour, texture and composition before bringing the individual elements together.

There's a beautiful, expressive quality to her artwork. The soft watercolour washes, textured brushstrokes and delicate details give each motif its own character.

Warm terracotta and sunshine orange sit alongside soft pink, leafy green and rich blue, creating a colourful design that feels fresh, happy and distinctly summery.

The Beauty Is in the Details

What makes Tropical Patchwork particularly special is the combination of its main design and coordinating border print.

The main artwork brings together a playful arrangement of tropical motifs, framed by decorative patterns and little pops of colour. The coordinating border features bold sunshine motifs, flowers and geometric detailing, adding another dimension to the design.

We loved the possibilities this gave us when designing the collection.

Rather than simply using the print in the same way across every garment, we've played with the placement of the borders to highlight different elements of the artwork.

You'll find them framing hemlines, accenting sleeves, following button openings and creating beautiful contrast throughout the collection.

It's these thoughtful little details that make each piece feel special.

Bringing Tropical Patchwork to Life

For our Celestine Summer 26–27 collection, we've brought Fizah's artwork to life on two of our favourite natural fabrics: breathable cotton poplin and a beautifully soft cotton-linen blend.

The collection brings together relaxed summer shirts, easy shorts, flowing pants and feminine dresses, each offering a different interpretation of the print.

The Florence Dress makes a feature of the decorative borders, while the Cali Shirtdress creates a beautiful balance between the playful main design and its coordinating details.

For a more relaxed look, the Rocco Shirt, Charlotte Pants and Macy Shorts can be worn together or styled separately with your favourite wardrobe pieces.

We've even introduced a matching bucket hat for a little extra summer fun.

A Fresh Pop of Green

To complement the tropical greens woven throughout Fizah's artwork, we've introduced Willow Green into the collection.

Fresh, vibrant and full of personality, this beautiful shade works effortlessly alongside Tropical Patchwork.

Paired with the print or worn on its own, Willow Green brings another playful element to the collection, creating endless opportunities to mix, match and make each look your own.
